Case Study: Multiple Sclerosis

How we turned community outreach into qualified, consent-ready referrals patients for a major center of excellence that was struggling to recruit a niche group of MS patients for a high-demand clinical trial.

3,000 local patients connected
123 eligible & interested referrals
11 advanced to consent stage
6X higher monthly consent rate

What changed

  • A two-year enrollment delay was reversed by the 3rd month.
  • Local peer-to-peer networks fostered conversations around exercise, learning, and memory.
  • Community sharing expanded reach beyond the sponsor’s already extensive network.

Problem

We partnered with a major research center that was recruiting a subset of Multiple Sclerosis patients willing to participate in an intensive study protocol.

2 years into the recruitment phase of the trial, they had exhausted the centers robust network of patients, and were in danger of losing their trial funding.

The sponsor was over budget and concerned that they would not be able to complete enrollment by their deadline.

Our approach

We mobilized the local Multiple Sclerosis community in the tri-state area using 5 approaches:

  1. Engaging existing patients in the client network and on social media
  2. Fostering conversations around patient journey designed to form connections among peers
  3. Broadening the funnel to encourage engagement and convesations in the community.
  4. Grouping patients based on patient journey and needs.
  5. Identifying patients most likely to benefit from the study.

Once engaged, we helped patients connect with each other, find resources and, if eligible, register for our client’s clinical trial.

Results

WeHealth connected 3,000 patients with Multiple Sclerosis resources in 1 year, including 123 eligible and interested Multiple Sclerosis patients referred to our client’s clinical trial. 11 made it through the client phone screen to consent stage. The client is now back on track to complete the study on time and on budget. Our efforts improved the client’s rate of consent by more than 6X per month.
